prsussmann
broken flapper on a filter bypass valve needs to be replaced. Looks like Waterway sells the valve - can it be replaced in place without removing the top side filter housing?
RDspaguy
Maybe... Gonna need alot more info than that. Brand, year, pics of the valve, filter, etc...
prsussmann
this is the valve...
prsussmann
I can see it at the bottom of the filter housing - the rectangular low flow opening looks just big enough for it to fit through. I need to know how the valve is “attached” in the two inch pipe. It feels solid but can’t imagine they would glue it? It would be nice if it “pops“ out somehow... RDspaguy
Can't say that I've ever tried. @CanadianSpaTech, you have any idea?

CanadianSpaTech
Usually ends up at the face of the pump. Never replaced one.
prsussmann
Thx - that’s what my local spa tech says too but wanted to check around. Indeed - found the flap up against the impeller. Haven’t found the spring though - a little worried about that going through the impeller... tpk
Hi, wondering how you made out with this issue? I have to replace the same flapper and hoping it pops out without me having to remove the whole filter canister? Also, will things still work if i just leave the flapper out? I fixed it
I was able to swap this bypass valve out with minimal tools. First drain the water down so you can see what you are doing without the water affecting your vision. My old valve had the flapper stuck open, so I broke the flap off with a pair of long needle nose pliers. Then you need to rotate the valve about 15-20 degrees counter clockwise. Mine was a little sticky, I used a long screwdriver and a hammer and tapped on one of the tabs and it broke free and rotated. it just barely fits through the small rectangular opening, but it does. Some force is required here to get the old out, and the new one in. I actually filled the tips on the new valve to round them over a bit to make it easier to get in. Once it is popped through the rectangular opening it wasn’t hard to get the valve lined up in the hole and twisted clockwise to lock it in. Hope this helps someone.
DVG
Does anyone know if this valve is really even needed? Is it ok to operate the hot tub without it? Mine broke off, went through the heater and fried it. I've replaced the heater but it looks like replacing this valve on my tub may require removal of the filter housing itself. Don't want to do that unless I absolutely have to. Thanks in advance.
CanadianSpaTech
Pump 1 on low will draw water through the filter. Pimp 1 on high the flapper opens and draws the needed extra water from the foot well. No flapper it might not filter properly
