jsthomas
All, Fairly new owner (October) of a HS Grandee. I've noticed my water levels going down over the past few weeks and find myself adding around 8 gallons of water each week. I know I'm going to lose some water with suits - people getting in and out of the tub - just seem to be noticing it more lately. Is it normal for me to lose more water in the winter? I don't think I have a leak - I do notice some wet spots around the skirt but I think that is from the cover. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks! Dr. Spa
The colder it is, the more evaporation will occur when the cover is off (the tub being used).
chem geek
If the air is drier in the winter or there is more wind (when the spa is uncovered), then there will be more evaporation. Higher relative humidity slows down evaporation.
salp
8 gallons a week seems high.... are you sure its that much? I would put in a service call if its that much.....

Jeff Jeff, I also think 8 gallons sounds like a lot, but it all depends on your relative humidty, temperature and (very important) how much you're using the tub. Evaporative loss should mainly occur withe the cover off... so if the tub's in use 3 hours a day then maybe it's all ok. If this is the case, brace yourself for a big electric bill!! When the cover's off all the great insulation doesn't matter much, the heat loss at the water's surface dwarfs the loss through the cabinet. If you go some days without using the tub, you can try to monitor the decrease in the level when the tub is getting used versus when it's sitting idle with the cover on. If most of your loss corresponds to periods of use, it's probably not a problem. I say "probably" because it still could be a leak in the jet plumbing. If you're losing water more or less equally with the cover on or off, then I would suspect you either have a leak OR the cover has a problem - not sealing well against the shell or otherwise letting too much water vapor out. Please report back if you figure out the problem (if there is one).
