My Pool Light Won't Stay On

I have a Hayward Astrolite 120v 500w that will stay on for about 15 minutes then turn off for about 30 minutes and then come back on. It will repeat this cycle. The light is only 5 yrs old. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas what could be wrong and if there is any way to fix this without replacing the light. There is no water inside the light and I have already tried to replace the bulb. Thanks.

I wonder if you replaced a lower wattage maybe 400w with a 500w? I know the fixture should be able to handle a 500w. I'm thinking the age of the fixture maybe giving you a sign. Manufactures are also not recommending the old style "globe" bulbs because they run hotter than newer reflector type bulbs.

Here's a trick, take the light out and replace with the largest wattage cfl you can find. They run tremendously cooler than regular lights, not to mention it may solve your problem very inexpensively.

As someone already mentioned, its time for a new light. Lights do have an internal thermal overload protection like a motor. I just replaced an entire light fixture on monday for the same exact reason. I would NOT recommend changing out parts that are not intended to be used in the light, mainly diffent types of light bulbs. They will lose their UL rating, it isn't safe, and i don't personally like to take chances where electricity and water meet.

sorry, i wanted to add (couldn't remember the names as its been a busy week and i'm tired) do not change bulb types such as halogen and incandescant. Each fixture is made to take one type or another, not both. I don't know any that is made to take CFL's. The bulbs are also pool and spa rated. At least the ones i always use.
