Rolling a round hot tub

Recommended Posts

Hey all, new guy here, and new to hot tubs. I'm going to look at a used d1 journey (round tub) this week and wondering about moving it. I've messaged a couple movers and looking at close to $700 so I would like to just do it myself with a couple buddies. I read that it's dry weight is 500lbs, and have seen a couple YouTube videos where a guy "rolled" a square tub to move it across his yard, standing it on edge and slowly rolling it. Would I hurt the tub if I rolled it to my trailer? Seems a simple way to move a round tub but I just don't know if I would wind up breaking the side panels or something by doing it this way.

I haven't been to the house yet to see it, but looking at Google maps satellite view it looks like it's in a garden type setting about 100' from the driveway.

Bring a strap or 2 and some cardboard wide as the spa is tall so the spa will sit with cardboard  under the acrylic edge to the base. Lay the strap down and the cardboard on top. Stand the spa on the cardboard and wrap the strap (s) around the spa. Slide the spa on the cardboard.

Thanks, I spoke with the neighbor today (owner lives out of country) and he thinks it's going to be quite a job to move it. I did a quick google earth view to get an idea of the yard and looks like a handful of rock steps then just a pebble path up hill to the driveway. Really think so long as the path is wide enough, if I can get it up over the steps it "should" be smooth sailing getting it to the trailer. Thinking laying a couple 2x3's up along the steps we might be able to push/slide it up? Going to stop in tomorrow to get a look at the yard and see if I can work a plan out to move it. Would cardboard be best or some of that corrugated plastic sheet stuff signs are made of (saw a youtube video where a guy made a skid out of one and it looked like it held up ok)? Hoping that I can pull it and have a buddy steady/push from the back, just want to make it easy as possible.

Would be better if you have some. How about a hand cart/dolly? Home Depot rental maybe?... or buy and return...lol.

Lay down a moving blanket first to protect the acrylic if needed

I have some scrap pieces of 2x4 and a couple lawn mower carts around. I'm thinking about seeing if maybe I can build a four-wheeled dolly using the lawn mower carts wheels/axles and framing it with the 2x4. Laying a couple 2x4 on the stairs if we can slide it up the stairs and then tip it on to the cart I should be able to wheel it out. Definitely a whole lot of "should" in that plan but hopefully when I get there this afternoon I'll get a better idea. I'm fairly capable and have two or three buddies that I think I can probably bring along as well so we might even be able to just pick it up and carry it over the stair section.

It's at a airbnb type rental place that doesn't get very many visitors. So I don't think it's been used much. And from what I've read online it seems these are pretty solid hot tubs. She has it listed at $1,500 or best offer, and very negotiable. So I think I can probably get it fairly cheap. Supposedly works a1 and has a new cover so I'm pretty eager to find a way to make it happen

Thanks for the responses. I managed to get out to see it today and they had it "winterized", aka, bottom full of antifreeze and unable to run it. Guy said the led controls are nearly impossible to see so needs a new topside control and hard to say what else so I think I'll pass on it for now. Thinking we might hold out for a new unit, something budget friendly but going new at least we won't be inheriting someone else's problems.
