MR.Furley75
I have been reading the forum for a couple days. I purchased a Bullfrog A7L and finally received it. My question is what do I want to use to sanitize my hot tub. The supplier gave me some general chemicals. They also gave me a bottle of Silk and some Silk Shock packets. I have been using test strips and fighting high TA. I have went through almost a whole bottle of PH decreaser. Super glad I found this forum but there is soooo much info my head is about to explode. I want to order a Taylor kit for testing but I am not sure if I want to go the chlorine route or the Bromine route. I really enjoy clear water, I have never really had any chlorine issues that I know of. the supplier said I don't need any chlorine if I use the silk product but I have been reading and it appears that you still need chlorine. And this stuff is really expensive. What is the general consensus? we have only used the spa twice if that matters and I almost have the PH and TA down far enough. I just need to figure out a path.. RDspaguy
Do you have ozone or uv? If so, I would use chlorine. I don't know what is in "silk" so wouldn't use it myself. @waterbear , do you know what it is?
waterbear
It is a product that requires 3 to 5 ppm chlorine or bromine along with a non chlorine shock. Their website doesn't really explain what the product does except make the water silky so it could be anything. They imply it helps break up biofilms which would put it in the same category as such products as Aqua Finesse. The ingredients are not listed either. These are red flags that tell me to stay away! The SDS only lists sodium carbonate (which is pH up) as the only dangerous ingredient. The SDS for their purge lists plain ordinary borax (sodium tetraborate decahydrate) and a quaternary surfactant (Dialkyl(C8-10)dimethylammonium Chloride). The shock is nothing more than plain MPS (non chlorine shock) according to the SDS. https://silkbalance.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/SilkBalance-Water-Treatment-SDS-final.pdf https://silkbalance.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/SDS-FOR-CLEAN-START.pdf https://silkbalance.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/SDS-for-Shock-Gems.pdf
MR.Furley75
Thank you. I do not have ozone or UV. If I don't have those should I use chlorine or bromine?
RDspaguy
That's up to you.
waterbear
Chlorine is less expensive but a bit more work. Bromine is more 'forgiving' and a bit easier to maintain, IMHO.
