Replacement Pump Question for HotSpring / Watkins Spa Please...

Good Morning. I have a HotSprings  "Hot Spot - Tempo" Model Spa.  I believe this spa comes with  2 pumps.  Pump 1 has 2 settings and Pump 2 has 1 setting.   In other words, push once or twice for pump one and push a third time for both pumps to have all jets on.

long story short,  the second time I push the controls and activate the second half of pump 1, it doesn't turn over. It was 'lethargic' and slow turning over for  few days and then just stopped turning over and would just click.  I turned the pump off right away thinking that it was seizing and would just burn out. That being said, I'm guessing I need a new pump, right?  I think I can install it myself, I just am looking for the correct all in one pump online to purchase that I can install easily with the manual, online video.     I will attach a few photos of the pump in question.

A side question to all of this,  I don't live in super cold climate, however sometimes when it's 30 or so overnight, my spa ends up being only 88-90 degrees in the morning and that is covered with a new cover and locked.     COULD the pump not working properly or only being 2.5 hp have anyting to do with this not staying warmer so I could enjoy it in the AM?  When I got the tub, this was not an issue for years. Could this have to do with the pump just not having enough "umphhh" to keep it hot. I don't know if these two things are one in  the same.

I was looking at pumps here and just don't know what to pick as a final choice if any. https://www.spadepot.com/?q=xp2%20hotsprings%20pump

thank you so much for the time and for any replies.

Pump HP has nothing to do with being able to heat or maintain heat.  Can the hot tub actually heat itself back up to temp?  If so, I would think the hot tub could be in sleep mode and the heater isn't being activated. Pretty sure if the pump was failing to turn on low speed, or if you had a bad pressure switch or circuit board you would get dashes on the display instead of the temperature.

That Spa Depot link just takes me to their website so I'm not sure what pump you are referencing.  The Hot Spring part number for the replacement pump is 73023.  Technically though, any pump that has the same specs (# of speeds, amp draw, frame size, intake/discharge size) will work.  Don't just compare hp, look at amp draw to.  Based on the images of the pump you have, an Aquaflo XP2 I think would be the closest thing to what is in there if you don't get the pump directly from Hot Spring.

thank you so much for the reply that is a MASSIVE help.

Sorry about the link. I pasted a more detailed link but of course it defaults back to the main page. I'll take your info, cross reference with my pump and find a hard link of an actual model and ask if you think it is compatible after I take all your notes into consideration and find the correct fit. huge thanks for that.

as for heater i 100 percent agree w you and the fact that you brought up the  blinking without me mentioning, could be it.    yes, the spa goes to temp no problem.  i failed to mention that if i go and manually turn on pump 3 and have all 3 of 3 jets flowing it heats back up to temp. it's just after that initial cycle and hours of rest during the winter.    I DID know about the sleep cycles, etc and I think I do have mine set up to run more than not but I will definitely double check that.

however,  what you said, may be the answer.  I believe I had the screen replaced once. This one I have had for several years and it does blink with dashes.   if i hit the arrow up it will  show me the temp i've just 'set' it to (104) and then go back to showing me   89-91 or so in the morning, then go back to blinking and dashes. however, on all 3 jets, it WILL get to temp.  Do you think that all of the issue lies in the current situation i am in?  thank you again so much for the help.

@RDspaguy Here is the circuit board. I took as many pics needed i hope.   also the panel inside that you probably don't need.  also, the error dashes that i failed to mention but you did.    if you open the cover it's blinking.   i hit the temp button UP and it says 104 which is where i set it.    after 3 seconds it says the real temp that is 76.  then it goes back to blink.  it's been that way for 3 years and honestly maybe that has somethign to do with the hot tub not staying near 100 plus overnight while the world sleeps.  i had thought and have seen in the code on the display that I had my jets timed to stay on for 3 or 4 hours continuous for this very reason yet it never hovers past 90 or so degrees in the AM if it's around 30 or so overnight.     thank you again for the help. let me know what else I can provide.

How about a pic of the whole circuit board in one pic?

I see you have had the fuses out, are they both good?

Where does the black wire from the 4 wire cable go? There should be a label by the terminal, like the red wire that goes to the terminal marked "jet1 black". On that subject, have you changed any wiring? Does the first push of the jet1 button start it in high speed or low?

Do you have a voltmeter?

I believe the black wire in bundle you asked about goes to jet 2. you can see the writing. i did several full pics of the panel and some close up of what i think you were asking me for.

fuses: i had someone replace possibly the display years ago who worked in the spa and pool industry. i cannot remmeber anything about the fuses but if you are telling me they were replaced, then he did that too.  I don't know how to tell if they both work.  As you know the spa does still heat on jet 3 and i dont' notice any other issues so i would think 'yes' they are working but i do not know electric so if you think there is a chance one or both could be bad, i certainly can buy  2 more and replace them just to be safe.

i do not own a volt meter but can probably get one at my work tomorrow and bring it home if you could tell me what  to do once i have it. I have used one once or twice.

jet 1 if i push once its low power on one side of hot tub. second push is higher power of jet 1.

That should answer your questions. photos are attached hopefullly that would help in determining the ------- on my display or at least get me closer to an answer. thank you so much RD for the help and to the forum.

Test voltage to the pump at the circuit board connections on both low and high speed. Place one tester lead on the white wire connection and the other on the black or red wire connection. Verify that low speed is turning off power when high speed is turned on. You will have to disconnect the wires from the board to test that. This will determine if it is a pump or control issue. Post voltages.
