De Powder

Recommended Posts

There are Diatomaceous Earth (DE or Diatomite ) substitutes available that are either made from perlite or cellulose fibers (paper).

Perlite is a volcanic glass mineral (hydrated obsidian) and is not biodegradable. However, it is a naturally occurring substance in the earth and is used as a filter medium in many kinds of applications, as is DE powder. Perlite (and DE) is commonly used to filter beer! It is also used in gardening as a potting compound much the same as vermiculite, another mined mineral, and DE (which is used as a potting medium for Bonsai trees). Perlite based products include Aqua-Clean and and AquaPerl

Cellulose based products, such as Fiber Clear, ZeoFiber and The Filter Fiber Stuff, ARE biodegradable. They are made from wood andd plant fibers (paper).

While both types perform well it is my opinion that neither perform as well as DE. YMMV however, so give them a try.
