Minimum Water Level

I ordered a cover lifter ( Cover Rock-it ) for my spa. It's been a week and still not shipped. I was hoping to have it before I needed to add water to my spa, as the lifter plates slide under the spa. But there's probably a chance the outside temp here might dip below freezing soon. So, my dumb question is..... How much water do I need in the tub to be able to power it up ?? I don't really want to fill it up and drain it and fill it up again within a week or so. And I figured, if there's still water in any of the lines, it would be in the lower part. I don't know how the cycles would be affected if it was at all possible. Any knowledge or other ideas would be appreciated.
