hrustar
I've heard mixed opinions on this... just curious....... Most people I've come across shock weekly. And my water guide suggest weekly shocking as well.
bart6453
I've heard mixed opinions on this... just curious....... I shock when my combined chlorine approaches 1ppm....Which by the way is almost never...only after a big party and lots of tub usage. I keep my free chlorine between 1ppm to 5ppm at all times. I have found the day of the week has no bearing on the needs of my water.
The Pup
Other: As needed. If I am going to be away during the week, I will shock once (typically 2oz of MPS) to reactivate my Bromine reserve and keep my sanitizer level above 1ppm a day-or-two beyond when I expect to return. If I am at home, I "target" my sanitizer level at 1ppm (+/- 0.5ppm) which requires smaller "shocks" one or two times per week (typically 0.5-1.0oz of MPS after spa use). In my case...spa use, Bromine demand and my target sanitizer level dictates when I shock vs. a set time interval. Note: Although not recommended, I have had no water issues keeping my spa at a 0.5-1.0ppm sanitizer level using a Spa Frog bromine/mineral floater and 1hr-every-12hrs filtration (half the minimum recommended amount). Dnepr Dave
I use Nitro's Dichlor/Bleach method. I only shock if I've let the chlorine get too low and the water gets cloudy. That hasn't happened with the current fill and I'm going on 6 months. Dave
Nitro
Chlorine and Bromine are two different animals. Bromine needs to be shocked for a different reason then Chlorine. i.e. to convert spent Bromine back to usable Bromine. I add ("Shock" whatever you want to call it) enough Chlorine (after soaks and/or 2-3 times per week) to ALWAYS maintain some Free Chlorine in the tub, and to keep my Chlorine Demand low. Do that and you will never have sanitation problems.
mcw53
I use Nitro's dichlor-then-bleach method and am on day 90 of my current fill. I add bleach and/or mps after each soak according to chem geek's rule of thumb. Combined chlorine is consistantly zero or very close to zero. I have never shocked beyond the regular per soak maintenance dosage.
