bpyazel
We just bought a new spa less than a month ago. Everything was working fine until today. Now when the pump is shut off it makes a whining sound for a few seconds. It makes no odd noises when running in either speed and seems to work fine except when you turn it off. Like I said, this is a brand new spa, but we got it cheep from a local business going out of business and there is no warranty. The only thing I did differently just before the spa started doing this was add a bottle of PH locker. We were going through a lot of PH - and thought this might help. I'm currently draining the spa, as I have found a very small leak near the heater unit too that I'm going to fix. What's your thoughts on this pump? Is it safe to use? It is the start switch engaiging for the next time it starts. Emerson motors make this sound alot. Most spa pump do not have enough torque to start, so they had a start capicitor. When the pump start this gives a little boost to help. while running to switch drops out. When the pump start slowing down when shut off the switch closes and can make the noise. There is nothing wrong with the pump.

Or it could be the impeller is loose or screwed up and as the RPM's drop it whines. What type of spa or what type of motor/pump?

It's from Islander Spas, http://www.islander-spas.com/spas-overview/standard-series, model S-250. Their store here is going out of business and they are selling all of their equipment below half price. All the electrical stuff inside looks like it is from Acura Spa Systems, http://www.acuraspa.com. The pump is a Megaflow model MF523026, http://www.acuraspa.com/megaflow.html. The control box/heater is the Minitrol and the digital readout device is the HL2000, both listed at this page http://www.acuraspa.com/minitrol_hl.html. I got the leak fixed. It wasn't anywhere near the pump btw and was just a loose fitting off the heater on the opposite side of the pump. After refilling the spa, the noise seems to have quieted down some, but is still there. I'm new to this and I'm wondering if I maybe gunked it up by using too many chemicals in the spa. I used a lot at first fighting with PH and TA levels and I think I was probably overdoing it. Anyway, seems to be running fine except for the noise, which isn't as bad as it was. Got the levels all correct fairly easily this time using very small amounts of chemicals. Hopefully this works itself out. A new pump is only $250 if it does fail, so I figure I still got a bargain on this thing. I'm going to let it run and see how it works this weekend. Forgot to mention, I think my chemical level problems all have to do with not having a cover. The darn thing just showed up the other day and had two big rips in it. Had to send it back and have to wait another two weeks for another one. So, until it gets here, all the sun and rain gets in it.
