What Is This (picture)

Recommended Posts

What is this? It showed up again this year. I believe it started below the water line but it is now above it. I have several spots. I raised my Calcium Hardness from 170 to 270 when it first started showing up. Don't know if that is the right thing to do. Any advice would be appreciated. I have a 22k gal in-ground concrete pool.

Is that a shadow or a stain on the plaster? If you are asking about the scale on the tile I suspect leaching from behind the tile. Scrape it off with a putty knfe, see if it returns to the same place. Can you post a pic from farther back?

What you are seeing is called effloresence and this is a result of sodium leaching through the mortar used in setting the tiles. Specifically the lime used in the tile setting preparation promotes this crystaline growth.

This is a problem that VERY few people have actual answers to. The only method that I have ever used that will actually reduce the amount of effloresence bleeding through the concrete is to wash on a weekly basis with 10:1 diluted vinegar. The only way to actually prevent effloresence is to reinstall all the concrete surfaces without using hydrated lime and by washing with concentrated vinegar before tiling.

I hope this information is helpful.
