Masher
OK I have a week to make a few final decisions on a pool contract I just signed. There is no price difference for my choices but I feel torn because of what friends suggest and what the pool builder is suggesting. Salt System vs. Ozone/chlorine system The pool builder says that 80% of their pools are the Ozone/Chlorine option over salt. He says that the chlorine use is 25% of a normal chlorine system so the pool will have chlorine similiar to tap water. He also says that the coping is fully covered if I go with this choice. Oklahoma flagstone My friends suggest going with salt, the salesguy suggests that the salt is more work and more expensive to maintain since the cell needs to be replaced very three years for about $400 a pop. Cleaner The pool equipment is Pentair equipment and they want to put in the Legend II pentair cleaner but they just switched from hayward equipment with polaris 280 cleaners. He says the legend II is equivalent with the polaris 280.

Polaris kind has the market on cleaners and the Legend was almost a copy of the 280 As for which system to use. Yes the cell has to be replaced, but with good water chemistry which is important no matter what sanitizer you wil use, and cleaning the cell it will last more than 3 years. I heard them go as long as 8+ years and still working. You will also need to replace the ozone bulb or chip that produces the ozone before a cell. Whatever will produce ozone gets weaker as time goes by. The Salt systems are the easiest way to go. You have the water tested and add the right amount of salt an bingo the machine makes Chlorine in short. Once the salt is in the water it stays in the water. The only way it will leave the water is from lots of rain, splash out, filter maintenance etc. It is also ajudtable as far as output. Another thing you don't have to go the pool store and buy buckets of chlorine. Salt system is safer and is the way to go in my opinion. I don't care for Pentairs generator, because Zodiac and Goldline and Autopilot give you more information to help stay within the guidelines and display important info. The salt system automatic makes what it needs and also reduces or can eliminate to use of chlorine shock. What you have to think about if your builder is pushing chlorine and has a retail store, he might understand salt system, which if you do have problems can he help. or is thinking of losing chlorine sales, but you still need to buy all the adjustment chemicals. Is there another pool store you can go to? If you are the fence just get chlorine without the ozone and down line you can add a generator

Could I also go Salt now and add an ozonator to the salt system later to make it perform better if necessary. They did just switch from Hayward to Pentair. Is one better than the other? You can a ozonator later if you want. I am not a real big fan of them, just because thay can get costly to keep running up to par. I know some people you gave up on there ozonators and didn't see any difference in water quality. Pentair's salt system to me is very basic, they only use light as idicators as to what the machine is doing. Goldline and Zodiac machine can tell you in the display the average salt reading, exact reading, current and voltage reading of the cell, plus error codes if anything should happen. Pathfinder
Go with the Salt/ No Ozone & opt for a more Salt friendly stone for your coping like Bluestone or a harder stone. I prefer a Jandy Salt system. The Pentair equipment is of very good quality so dont be concerned. Your Builder may have just decided they didnt want to carry the same equipment as everyone else, hence the switch.
Masher
Thanks everyone. I think I'll go with the Salt system. Apparently Oklahoma flagstone works well with salt systems.
