I'm from Ontario Canada. I've been reading several posts on this board for months now...trying to figure out what to purchase, etc. It seems like we might have gotten an awesome deal! We purchased over the weekend a used hot tub - a 2000 Beachcomber 520. The seller used it for 3 years only and then got divorced, moved the tub 2+ times in the last 3-4 years and never set it up (cause he knew he was moving on a temporarily basis). Anyhow, they (he & his fiance) didn't think they would use it so decided to sell it. They were asking $1,000 and were garanteeing it's functionality or money back. It's in a good shape...never spent a winter outside (was in the house). The color is still bright (green), etc. Yes, there is some dust/sand & stuff around the jets and the drain...but nothing major. We got it for $500.00!! Woohoo! So now, the electrician will come & do the work needed...hopefully all will be well when we started it up! Here are my questions. We were considering contacting a Beachcomber distributor and having a specialist come on site to start it up. I just spoke to a local Spa dealer and said that to his knowledge, we don't need that as it's "fairly" a simple process. Question 1: Any recommendations on this first thought? By talking with her, I decided that the Chlorine system would be best as we're used to it with our pool. We never had a reaction to our pool, it's easier & it's cheaper. Question 2: Are my thoughts on Chlorine exact? Here's the process I was thinking & recommended by many to do: 1- Flush/Clean the pipes. Use the shop vac to suck up most of it. Then fill up the tub & use a Whirlpool Rinse (the stuff you use when you close your tub). Let it run for 2-3 hours and then drain. 2- Take out the jets/drain and clean them with water & vinegar (there is a bit of build-up on them). 3- Clean the tub with the spa stuff. Then, use the shine/wax stuff (forgot the name) and do the whole tub. 4- Put in new filter. Fill the tub & let it run for 24hrs (run = with jets or without???). 5- Bring a water sample to have it diagnosed (we have hard water). 6- Purchase & use the stuff recommended and start it up! Then put in some plumbing cleaner/flush and a bunch of chlorine. Let it run for a day and drain, clean, rinse and refill. Great deal, soak away. We got our water tested and our PH was a bit high (but not too much). I had to purchase the PH Down & the Metal Guard (we have hard water - no water softener yet). We decided to go the Chlorine way since we already have a pool and are used to it. All is good!! We LOVE it! Did I say WE LOVE IT??? I went in around 7:30 tonight...and planning to go back just before bed!!! I think this will be part of our daily life from now on!
