Proper Treatment For Well Water

We just bought a 4 man hot tub and set it up at the cottage. We used our well water (hard water) to fill it. I bought a pool testing kit with the yellow/red side - yellow being for Bromide/Chlorine and red side for PH. Now I've added the requested amounts of chemicals but my yellow is orange and my red is light blue. These colours aren't indicated on the kit telling me if I have too much or too little of each. We installed it Friday night and by Monday morning, the bottom of the spa had a deposit of rust. I don't know what to do? Can this problem be fixed without having to empty it all again? Can you please help?

You have a large amount of iron in the water by the sounds of it. You need to use metal remover in the spa that also coagulates the metal particles so the filter can pick them up. You should also use a pre filter when filling the spa to help reomove the metals at filling. You will have to clean your filters every few days to remove the iron until you get it all out of the water. This could also be what is messing up your readings on your test kit.

Also, do all of what Hillbilly says BEFORE adding an oxidizer (chlorine, bromine or MPS). The oxidizer is what's causing the iron in your water to rust.

Thanks for your suggestions Dr. Spa. This metal remover that you are suggesting me to buy, can I find that with the pool chemical section? As for using a pre-filter at time of filling, I'm not sure where to put that since my unit only has one compartment for 1 filter?? The spa is already filled, is there any way of fixing the problem now or should I empty it and start from scratch?

You use the pre filter and add the metal remover before doing any of your ather water chemistry. This would be at start up. A pre filter hooks on the end of your hose that you use to fill the tub, thus filter the water before it enters the hot tub. It justs screws on the hose. The metal remover you add when the tub is full and heating. Clean your filters after the tub is heated up, then start adding your other chemicals/adjusting PH ect. PS....I am MRS. Hillbilly
