Bugman1400 Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 My skimmer basket rests in the skimmer box on a plastic ring-like structure. However, it seems that the plastic ring has broken loose and the skimmer basket now falls to the bottom of the box where the return is and doesn't filter out the big stuff (like leaves). The plastic ring can also now be pulled out of the skimmer box through the top. Please tell me how to fix this. I'm guessing I can't just glue it. Quote

Well, I've done a bit more research on the internet and learned that the ring in question is called a Skimmer Support Ring. I am surprised none of the pros here have heard of it. Anybody know the best way to glue these back down? Quote
jkusmier Posted September 17, 2010 Report Posted September 17, 2010 Drain the water level down to below the skimmer, let it dry thoroughly (hair dryer will help), gently clean the mating surfaces w/ some fine steel wool and carefully apply a good-quality epoxy cement designed for pool applications (bonstone comes to mind). Once it's cured you can re-fill, although you're probably preparing to close depending on where you live. Quote
quantumchromodynamics Posted September 17, 2010 Report Posted September 17, 2010 ECX1308 “Schmear” Compound for Field Repairs (White) http://www.haywardnet.com/pdfs/replace_pdfs/245Hay2009.pdf The repair compound is cycolac dissolved in MEK. PC-11 works well for repairs. It works best dry. http://www.pcepoxy.com/our-products/paste-epoxies/pc-11.php If the ring has any significant contact, you can use pvc glue to glue it down. Quote
Bugman1400 Posted September 18, 2010 Author Report Posted September 18, 2010 I finally figured out to call Hayward and I'm surprised that they did not say anything about the Schmear. The support tech on the phone had to call me back after consulting with a Hayward engineer. He stated that the skimmer box is an ABS plastic resin. So, I'd imagine that I could get the ABS glue from HD or Lowes. I guess PVC glue will work also. Thanks! Quote
AFiremanFirst Posted September 23, 2010 Report Posted September 23, 2010 PVC and ABS are not the same, therefore I would not use one glue for the other. For simplicity... I'd glue the ring to the skimmer basket and use a wire for a handle to remove it. BTW I don't notice any weights in your basket. Baskets tend to float (positively bouyant) That is what the original handle was for... To make it negetively bouyant. However you can use a 2oz fishing weight or a rock to keep the basket down in the ring. Sure the basket will stay down fine under vaccuum, but when the system shuts down it will float and not return to its intended spot. In all reality you probably don't need glue, just some weight to keep the basket down when the system is off. There are two holes in the basket where the original handle was. Quote

The small disk at the bottom of the basket is a weight. The handle that comes with that basket is too small to weight down that basket by itself. Quote
AFiremanFirst Posted September 26, 2010 Report Posted September 26, 2010 pool clown, you are correct! I missed the disk in the bottom! Thanks! Quote
Pool Clown Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 I wonder if the OP could just find a basket that is a little bigger, wouldn't have to mess with the ring, or the glue. Quote
