Apart from testing TA, PH and Bromine every other day or so and adjusting it as need, I perform a weekly Shock (with MPS) every week. Is there any other hot tub maintenance I should be aware of of perform.

Depends on your method and your water. You may need to add a metal/scale defense. I do, but I'm still not sure if i need to. Also, you may need to add a spa brite or sea kleer type product if you have cloudy water (As i understand it, some particles are to small for filters. These products bind them together so they can be removed by the filter.) Last thing I can think of is an oil/scum ball or additive if that is an issue for you.

Any recommendations on how to clean the filters I have just been cleaning them with a hose. Is it advisable to use some chemicals to clean the oily stuff??

Clean your filters...depending on filter size and spa use will depend how often you clean them.

Most people do them monthly.

I'd recommend TSP (Trisodium Phosphate). You can get a 4.5 LB box at Home Depot for less than $10. Mix one cup of TSP in 5 gallons of warm water and soak over night.

If you use TSP, make sure it is not phosphate free. It's labeled TSP pf.

You can also use Cascade powdered dish detergent. It's loaded with phosphates and works great (and it's cheap). Just make sure to rinse it well with a sprayer of some type when done soaking.

I went to one of the the local hardware store (Menards) in town and they did not have a TSP with Phosphate. All the different types of TSP's they had were all without phosphate. I am not too sure what difference does having TSP with phosphate make vs. no phosphate? Can you please help !

The phosphates are really the active ingredients in the cleaning process. From what I understand, they are the agent that truly cuts the oil/scum and grime.

However, many cities (mine included) have banned the selling of phosphate products for environmental reasons. HOWEVER, as said in my first post you can buy cascade powdered dish detergent with phosphates, even in cites that have banned phosphate products. WHy? I don;t know. A loop hole I guess. When buying the Cascade, check the ingredients for phosphates. Some versions of Cascade have it, others do not. I'll check to see which one I have when I go home tonight.

I used Cascade to clean my filters with great results. Use 2 to 3 Tablespoons per five gallons, let soak for a few hours at least (over night is best). Then spray clean with a sprayer.

Just curious about your overnight filter cleaning...

Do you have a second set of filters that you insert when you are cleaning your dirty filters overnight? Or do you not worry about the circulation of water through your spa minus filters ('cause their soaking overnight) when the automatic circulation pump kicks?

I have a question as to how to know WHEN to shock your hot tub??? I have a new 350 gal Costco tub with ozonator and bromine system (tabs etc) in place. I'm using this 3-4x week one person plus add a group of 6 once in awhile. I have stufff balanced but Ph maybe a little high. Strips a little chancey..just got a new taylor kit. I really do not want to shock (using chlorine now) unless I must. How do you know re the organics in there? I'm reading that organic reduction is different than the sanitation.

Any tips would be appreciated! And Ii can't really figure out how to post under chemistry w/o using reply!!! Tnk MJK
