I was reading the label on our "chemical" based algaecide - main active ingredient is copper - BTW - label says if you get any of this concentrate on your skin to call a poison control center - LOL, but it's true - some manufacturers claim their product is "chemical free" but those with copper ain't!!

Fact is, to maintain clean and healthy water in a pool or spa you much use some sort of sanitizer. Natural water quickly becomes green and very unhealthy water.

In our pool we use a combo of chlorine and algaecide to maintain clean and clear and healthy to swim in water.

Our Hot Springs spa is about 14 years old - pretty reliable - ozonator plus a low level of chlorine has meant reliably clean and clear water with very little trouble or extra maintenance. Facts seem to be that if you realistically want to wallow in healthy and natural hot water find a natural hot spring pool and settle down in it. For a box/shell in your backyard with hot water a sanitizer is required.

Hope our experience is helpful to you.

So now I now why your pool doesn't get algae. It's not just any sort of algaecide you are using, but a copper based one. Copper is a very effective algaecide, but it can also stain the pool and turn blond hair greenish if the copper levels get too high or the pH rises too much. With your use of Trichlor, rising pH isn't going to be a problem, but shocking with a lot of chlorinating liquid or bleach (or Cal-Hypo) could raise the pH. So I'm glad you've been very fortunate for 20 years not having any problems with copper staining (assuming you've been using the same algaecide all that time).
