Fiberglass Spa - In Ground?

I am interested in building a stone surround about 18" high off of my stone patio and then sinking a fiberglass tub in to it (so a 36" tub would be 18" below grade and the top would be 18" above grade). I have pleanty of room behind it to house the pump and heater in an enclosed cabinet.

Is this a totally crazy idea?

Some manufacturers do make in ground versions of their tubs. I know Sundance makes versions of their Optima and Marin, and one or two others.

However, you might be able to do an above ground tub in that situation. The main thing will be how to allow for drainage. If you can do that, you might be better off with an above ground tub, in terms of price and upgradability. Check out the D1 web site - they have some of the best photos of "portable" tubs in some amazing setups. They have stone surrounds, sunk into decks, half sunk in, etc. In particular, I think it was the Aurora II model that had some designs similar to what you might be talking about. It might give you some ideas.
