How Do You Keep The Rats Out Of Your Heater?

A couple of years ago my Hayward heater stopped working. An easy fix, some dirty rat severed the pressure sensor's vacuum hose.

The other day it wasn't working again. The display showed a SF error code. That's a temperature sensor error. There are two thermistors in a threaded plug with two red wires and one black wire going to the control board. The black wire was severed. Another easy fix. :)

The bottom of the heater of overflowing with rat poop :o OK, not overflowing, but an exorbitant amount of the stinky stuff.

How do I keep them out?
