We just had a consultation with a pool builder and I think it went well but I just want to run it by the good people here for any opinions. The cost? In line with what we expected. Bear in mind that things are waaay out of line, price-wise, where we are (Hawaii). We know that and accept it. We are looking to put in a vinyl pool, 12X24. Walls: Fiberglass with concrete footings Floor: Vermiculite Concrete Liner: Kafko SuperMax 30g. Filter: Hayward Cartridge SWG: Goldline Pump: Pentair Challenger Deck: Concrete, three feet all around plus approximately 10x10 patio on the stair end of the pool. Options: one 250 watt halogen light, one deep-end ladder, one set of handrails near the stairs Any ideas, suggestions? Thanks for any help. txpoolguy Posted May 29, 2010 Report Share Posted May 29, 2010 Most of what you post looks okay. The one thing I notice is the pump is a different brand than the other equipment. If you change the pump to a Hayward, to match the Hayward filter & Goldline (by Hayward) SWG, you may be able to get an extended warranty. I understand you're probably looking at premium costs in Hawaii, and my recommendation is aesthetic only - you'll love the pool regardless. But consider fiber optic perimeter lighting. If your budget won't give another $800-1000, at least consider opting for a liner track that will accommodate it in the future. You can synch it w/ most floods (halogen or LED) for a great effect... Groo Posted June 6, 2010 Report Share Posted June 6, 2010 when we did our liner pool years back. we did pressure treated sides with 1" insulating foam for sides. we also did the foam on the floor, but the instructions said just sand. If you are looking at concrete floor and deck with fiberglass walls, why not just get a concrete pool? we get just over 10 years of life from a liner (and we probably stretch out out too far), but its open less than 6 months a year. I've got to think all the extra sun you'll be getting will wreck your's much quicker. I'm not sure I'd bother with a light if I were you. I assume you'll have some sort of pool shed. just stick a flood lamp on it if you want. a 10x10 patio and 3' suround sounds a bit on the small side, if the fence will be right there. if you have it in a fenced back yard, it would be ok. maybe even skip the patio if it helps take some of the sting out of it. in addition o the extended warantee thing. often pumps and filters are sold as a set at a mild discount. I recently purchased a new filter. I was leaning toward a cartridge, but couldn't justify the price jump over a sand filter.cspeaking of filters, be sure they don't stick you with too small of a filter. He has his reasons, I guess---he was in the plumbing/heating business for many years and pored over the specs for about half a million pumps and filters before picking the Pentair pump. I can see the point in going with one brand, though, now that a few of you have pointed out the benefits. I think we will skip the light. It will add over $900 to the cost and for that money I can throw a flashlight and a few rocks in a ziploc and toss it in the pool, LOL. Just kidding but yes, we do have a shed nearby (actually, the house will be only eight feet away from the pool) and we already have floodlights on the house. I've seen some beautiful lighting treatments in pool magazines and online but in all honesty I think we've topped out the budget and we still have to allow for unforeseen expenses if they come along. Groo---a concrete pool here would add at least 20% more to the price. I have friends who have concrete pools and friends who have vinyl pools and while both have their advantages it seems that the vinyl pools are easier and less expensive to maintain. I might be kidding myself but I'm hoping for the best. Vinyl liners (30g) last about 10 years here too. Our yard is small and fully fenced. I still want a bit of lawn and landscaping around the pool---we actually increased the amount of cement work that we are doing and we also have a fairly large lanai that is off the back of the house (it's really an outdoor living room) so I think we'll have plenty of entertaining space. We just wanted enought patio at one end of the pool to put a small table and a few chairs. We also have some palms and brick planters around the perimeter of the yard, right up to the fence. Access is tight---we cut down a fan palm and moved a shed and have to remove a portion of our fence to get the equipment in. Should be fun! We signed the contract, BTW. Now I am having dreams about giant boulders and tons of adobe clay (extra cost for excavation if they find those things, of course). Thanks again for all your opinions! Wow---was this a DYI job? It looks like you have a lot more property and much easier access than we have in our little Windward Oahu typical suburban tract home. Looks terrific!
