stygian7
The price doesn't seem completely unreasonable, but maybe a little high. I know there are a number of posts on this topic, but a little input from those who have more knowledge than me would be helpful. I haven't yet gone to see the tub, but from the pictures, it appears to be in good shape. The description includes the following information: "Professional replacement of New titainium heater (factory replacement upgrade from the previous heater), heater circuit card in control box and both sensors three months ago. Includes cover, cover lift assist and cradle for the cover. 220 circuit breaker box and about twelve feet of outside flex conduit also included" I was thinking the price should be a little closer to $1200 for a tub that old, but maybe I'm being unreasonable here. Another option on the table is a 2005 Cal Spa V200 for $1500. That tub looks like it might not have been as meticulously taken care of and from my research, is a lower quality brand. Thanks in advance for any input.
THE SPA GUY
stygian7 With your research of spas you are correct in that Hot Springs is a better brand, we used to sell call<. i happen to have a v800 cal trade in from 2005 for 1500.00 , but the sovern is a good model , as more features...depending on were you are at the price is not that far off, you may be able to get it for 1200.00., but check it out in person to see the condition of it.... spatech (the unreal one)
When you start talking about spas that are 5, 7 ... years old the main consideration isn't really how old it is or what features. The 2 main things I'd want to consider are CONDITION and can I see it in full operation. I'd rather have a 7 year old well maintained spa than a 5 yr old with issues. Check it out, see if they have documentation for the parts they say they've replaced and in the end used spas are very negotiable. If you see it, like it, think it's in good shape and want it make a counter offer, all they can do is say no.
JimKW
I just bought a 2003 Sundance Optima for $2,000 and think I got a steal because it is like new. I had to spend another ~$1,000 for the electricain and the guys who moved it, but the whole package for under $3,000 was well worth it. stygian7
I just bought a 2003 Sundance Optima for $2,000 and think I got a steal because it is like new. I had to spend another ~$1,000 for the electricain and the guys who moved it, but the whole package for under $3,000 was well worth it. That sounds like a great deal. I personally prefer the seating plan on the optima, but like others have said, condition on a spa this age is very important. I'm not a big fan of loungers, so that's a bit of a downside for me. That being said, it's just my wife and I that will be using it, so maybe I'll grow to like the lounger. Besides, I'm really just looking for a tub to last the next three years. After that, I finish dental school and we will be selling the house and moving. I don't plan on moving whatever we purchase with me. We're going to look at the tub this afternoon. The seller is a colonel in the marines and from the pictures and my conversations with him, seems like the type that has taken meticulous care of it. He has receipts, the old parts, and the boxes the new parts came in, so there's little doubt that the parts stated as replaced have, in fact, been replaced. He has also offered to help with moving it, which is important as I don't have a vehicle with a hitch receiver.
JimKW
The movers I used charged me $275. Well worth it, but the Optima is a big tub. I hear people say how they don't like the hump, but that's what we (my wife and I) really like about it. 99% of the time is just my wife or just me in it. Sometimes the two of us, but on Easter we had three Grandkids my son and his wife in there with us. So the bigger size does come in handy occasionally. stygian7
We went and looked at it this afternoon. As anticipated, it was in excellent condition and we decided to get it. Won't have it here for a couple weeks due to busy schedules, but the agreement has been made.

As is usual for a daily experience, I had a customer come in today and tell me about her 22 year old Hot Spring Spa that she still uses regularly. Heaters need replaced occassionally, but as long as you don't freeze the hot tub you should get a good long life out of it. And the new Titantium heaters Hot Spring uses are proving to have great reliability for us here in Montana. So you should be set to go for quite some time. Dnepr Dave
Congratulations! Be sure to get the sub panel with the GFCI breakers in it. Watkins (the manufacturer) uses a peculiar two breaker sub panel on their spas, they can be difficult to find and expensive to buy. stygian7
Good to hear from a fellow Montanan...I'll likely be returning there when I finish dental school in a few years.
QUOTE (stygian7 @ Apr 16 2010, 06:10 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

We went and looked at it this afternoon.
