Misty
I have had crystal clear water since we stopped swimming in the pool in October. We have run the pump about 2 times a month and everything has been fine. I did however have the solar cover on and now bottom of pool is light green. any suggestions???? On way to Wally world to purchase some new filters and some cholorine. POOL STORE CLOSED UNTIL APRil. Can you believe that..... oh well thank heavens for walmart. chem geek
Since your water doesn't freeze over (since you're in Florida), you should keep chlorine in your pool and have the pump run at least a little every day. That will prevent algae growth. Alternatively, if the water temps get cooler, you could use an alagecide such as PolyQuat 60 to prevent algae growth, but will need to replenish it every so often -- probably every other week or at least once a month if the water is cool. You can read about getting rid of algae here where you shock with chlorine. Algae can grow not only in cool water, but even in freezing water, it just grows much more slowly. This is why you need to keep chlorine in the pool. With a pool cover and cooler water temps, you would only probably need to add chlorine every other week or so -- perhaps only once a month if the water is very cold. If you are in south Florida, then your water probably isn't that cold.
imnay
Winter tempertatures have a wide range between N. Florida and S. Florida. We live in N. Florida and didn't run our filter/chlorinator from mid-November until mid-February. At first we had algae in the water but after a few freezing nights it all died and fell to the bottom leaving the water itself clear. Anywho, mid-February we began running the filter system and adjusting the PH and alkilinity and adding algaecide - the usual drill and now everything is crystal clear again and we can swim once the temp gets high enough. IMO - if the water in your pool looks clear and the green is on the bottom the green is dead algae and can be swept or vacumed away. You will need to make sure your PH and Alk. are in range and start adding algaecide - the usual drill - this is the best time to get everything right in a Florida pool so all will be ready for the swimming season.
