My gf and I did not like the way it sat up high forming a "wall" when it was folded off, we liked having it clean/open air around all 4 sides. Altough the covermate II does provide a lower profile. Also it does cost $250-$300 dollars it seems, which is still a consideration as well. We thought maybe we'll start without one and get it if necessary. We just bought a cover lifter for USD 78 (44 Pounds) in the UK and that was including USD 19 postage. This happens to be a ripoff version of the cover caddy http://www.covervalet.com/products/coverli...ddy/default.asp which is the one I plan on getting due to the fact that installs on one side only. This keeps the tub locked up when we don't want kids or others to use it and means we don't have to mess with the cover in the snow (we get a lot) The privacy shades are on three sides but can be rolled up in a second if you want the sides open. Called no dealer in my area, closest dealer 3 hours away. Quoted $4,995.00 retail, home show special until this Sunday $3,995.00. This does not include delivery and set up. Local deliver and set up $300.00, 3 hour drive set up $500.00. Also will need an electrician to hard wire this unit to 110. One blind is $295.00 3 blinds $800.00. Do not think I will be able to get up to this dealer by this Sunday, my total price would be $5,495.00. I have been researching this one, seriously thinking about it. Called the Manufacturer and they said around $2900. Dealers around here want between $4000 and $5500 plus install. One thing I've heard though is the hydraulic lifters don't like sub -25c temps. I think once I have the cash together I'll get one and get rid of my cover that I have. In my previous post, in this thread, I said that there was $30.00 worth of pipe in a cover lifter, I just made one and there is $11.00 worth of pipe in it! The total cost of my home made cover lifter was $20.00, a far cry from the $200.00 that was quoted to me at the home show for a lifter that looks just like mine. Quite a mark up! I made it out of two 10 ft sticks of 3/4" flexible electrical conduit, it is the kind that can be bent with a conduit bender. I bent them into squarish U shapes, the middle of the U is the same width as my hot tub. I connected the U's together with a conduit coupler on one side and a 4 ft piece of 1" PVC conduit on the other side. The metal conduit slides inside of the PVC and acts as a bushing to prevent wear on the cover. My tub is on a concrete slab, I didn't want to drill holes in it so I attached one end of the square hoop to a 4 ft 2x6 with 1" conduit hangers, they are big enough to allow the 3/4" metal conduit to pivot when the cover is lifted. To prevent the cover from flopping over when opened, I made two 4 ft chain stops. I attached one end of each to the lifter with stainless steel hose clamps and the other end of the chain is attached to the wooden spa skirt with 1 1/2" vinyl deck screws. Total time to put this together was about 45 minutes. Dave Here are some photos: Nice job. can you run liquidtight across the ground like that. I would get crap for that from my inspector. Dnepr Dave Posted April 2, 2009 Report Share Posted April 2, 2009 I do all my own electrical work, I even wired the house. I ran the wire for the tub years ago, anticipating the spa installation. I had a real cool electrical inspector who was very helpful and informative. I got the tub last July and finished the hook-up, finishing the short run from the existing junction box, where the tub wiring ended, to the new sub panel and on to the tub. The covered location was really nice last winter when it was snowing hard and we sat in the tub watching it snow while sipping mimosas to cool off. They seem to be pretty necessary yet only a few "low end" models include them. Mine has a built in cover that opens in the middle and it's great - sure makes me glad I didn't buy some used tub then get home and realize after dropping two grand or more and hauling it home myself I still gotta buy and fit a cover before I could even fill it to use it.
