drip
Hi, I've been working on pools and spas for 8 years now and would like to give it a try on my own. If anybody has any tips or experiences that would help they would be greatly appreciated. It would be a cleaning, repair (spas and pools) and hopefully selling portable spas within a year. I am located south of Dallas about 20 minutes. Thankyou!!!
Pathfinder
Being in your shoes b4 I will say you need to have an existing client base that you are sure will follow you to your own store once you leave the company you work for. I went from the service & building end to management then my own business. This is an easier transition then going from service guy to store owner. I learned a hell of a lot doing the day to day office work which gave me a better perspective of what it takes to operate a store. If you have never dealt with that part of the business b4 then your missing about 80% of what its gonna take. My advice is to just do service on your own (no store) for 2 to 3 years. This way you can build a client base and you wont have to worry about customers once you open a retail location. When you leave the company your employed with right now leave on the best of terms and tell them what you are planning to do. If you just up and quit or leave on bad terms your old company may try and come after you with litigation for customer tampering and such because basically your trying to take their customer base which they have established not you. Lastly be prepared for longer days and sleepless nights. When you own a company even the smallest of problems become magnified by tonnes and be sure this is what you want to do. Start licking envelopes. Most guys make more money working for someone else and do what you can on the side. When you cant handle it anymore go on your own. The pool bizz is a whored out market.
