  1. Pool putty is two part clay that is mixed together and when is sets up it will be hard as the PVC plastic I found it and in between my fingers is irritated as hell from mixing it barehanded.
  2. Would you include a ball valve Tee setup as I have on my suction side? Also, any opinion on those "sweep" fittings? I'm intrigued. I don't think I've ever seen ball valve Tee manifolds for both return and suction lines. Thanks.
  3. It happened to me because of a suction leak and a dirty filter kicking back soil.
  4. Are you talking rigid Sch 40 PVC? I'm not familiar with sweep fittings either. I found them, thanks.

  6. Now that I have my suction lines completed I'm tackling the return lines. There are 2 return ports. Is it better to run 2 separate return lines through a ball valve tee assembly like the suction lines or should I just tee them at the first return port?
  7. I need some pool putty to seal a small separation in my skimmer collar. The plumber's putty at Lowe's indicates it should not be used on plastic. Is Pool putty the same thing?l
  8. Earlier today I pressure tested my suction lines which were good but on pump restart a blast of dirt came out the return line then cleared. I disassembled the filter which had mud in it and was filthyand I cleaned everything.I restarted the pump and got a new blast of dirt which then cleared. Suction leak even though the pressure test was good? The fittings are exposed and I see no leaks.
  9. Very frustrating. I had the hose filling the pool for 8 hours but did not realize it was kinked and so another day of waiting. Hope there's no other issue. Up and running with no leaks so far. Filter pressure is now 17 at start up which is about 7 pounds higher than before. I upgraded to 2" rigid Sch 40 from 1 1/2" black flex. Seems like the 2 ninety degree and 1 45 degree bends are the culprit. Oh well. FYI, they make flexible 1.5 and 2 inch PVC piping, much better then the black stuff I knew that but rigid was the preferred pipe by the installers I spoke to. i would agree rigid is tougher but if you back fill with "good" dirt first there should not be a problem. Do you mean sand? Pool now getting dirt returned again after I filled the trench around the skimmer earlier today. I'm baffled but there is dirt at the bottom of skimmer so somehow it's getting in then sucked in the suction port. Should have changed the skimmer I guess but have no idea how it attaches. More concrete cutting and digging,I'm beginning to hate this friggin pool. I'm gonna fill the trench with food coloring/water and see if I can identify the source. It's gotta be the suction port fitting but I sprayed it with dye and water and nothing. Any other ideas?

  11. Locally a gallon of shock contains 12.5% chlorine and sells for as low as $2.79/gal and Clorox at 6% chlorine sells for $1.99 a gal. Why use bleach at that price? My wife says the lowest she pays for bleach is $1.59 but it is 5.5% chlorine which is less than 1/2 the content of the liquid shock we use. I will admit that in the 10 years we have had this 25 year old inground pool we never do anything but chlorinate. Never any algae, skin irritations,or pool damage. Our pool is vinyl lined steel. My pool is crystal clear, the pump is 25 years old,the underground plumbing is in the process of being replaced by me due to improper installation 25 years ago resulting in leaks now. The liner is 13 years old and has some fade but that's it. Just my personal experience with my pool. Job Lot.

  17. I'd recheck my pump bonding and grounding. Did the wiring get knicked underground? Is the circuit GFI? Are the conductors sizes correct?Current follows the least path of resistance. If there is excessive voltage in the circuit (bad transformer) like a previous poster had it can actually arc undergoround if exposed or in close proximity to ground metals etc. Do you have access to a Megger? Check connections first but if they're buried!! Is it close enough to run a test wire? Basically run a homerun fron C/B to pump,if the problem stops,it's in the wire run. BTW,I am not a licensed electrician.

  19. In the past my electric bill would approximately triple from $100 in winter to about $275 a month in summer. I'm gonna scream at this next bill with the 35% or so rate increase.

  21. I'm way below the skimmer down to the other suction wall fitting (34" deep) which was teed off the skimmer. The skimmer is in good shape other than those damaged threads. I've already dry run 2" pipe to the other skimmer port and wall fitting. I'm going to double plug the 1 1/2" port and run it for a few days before filling the trench. We'll see. Got all the pipng in today, tomorrow the test!

  23. Steel pool with plastic skimmer and old black flex piping with gray (nylon?) fittings. Fitting was absolutely crossthreaded into skimmer port and 2 threads of skimmer port were damaged.
  24. I just dug up the suction line of my inground pool and found at least 4 different leaks. I also discovered the fitting at the bottom of the skimmer crossthreaded and the skimmer threads damaged. It was probably leaking here since installation 25 years ago since it's 30" below concrete and the concrete is original. I have laid out new 2" rigid schedule 40 and plan to use the other fitting which was plugged and is 2" on the skimmer bottom. Any way to repair plastic threads so I can plug the damaged (1 1/2") hole and not have to worry? This fitting is plastic so PVC cement will fail. Should I just use a standard plug top and bottom and dry plug the fitting port? Thanks.
