AMG Posted February 8, 2010 Report Posted February 8, 2010 So this is something new for me... 1995 HotSpring Grandee I try to follow Nitro's advice as well as I possibly can. I Dichlor to 30-40ppm CYA and then it's Clorox after that. I have gone out of town a few times lately for 5-6 days. I decided to try to shock my spa to about 12-14ppm (30-40ppm CYA, 7.2ph, 100ppm TA, etc.), lower the heater to about 1-2 which seems to bring it to about 80 degrees. When I come back my spa is still at 3-5ppm chlorine, but I've seen that I have some light blackish mold forming around the jet control knobs and various other parts that are all above the water line. The water looks great, no problems there, but I am not used to seeing this mold. I got out my hard nylon brush I have used to clean my spa in the past and it all came off. I turned my heat back up and my spa is now at 101 just waiting for me to go in. Any idea why this is occurring? And man o man, I always have so many damn spiders under my damn cover. I lift it up and at least 3-5 are there, some fall in and i have to scoop them out. I'm sure some make their way in to the filter and have to be broken down by the MPS and chlorine Quote
BigDfromTN Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 No spiders here..... BUT do have issue with the Black Mold looking stuff above the water line. Anyone have a clue on this and a cure? Quote
zroger73 Posted February 11, 2010 Report Posted February 11, 2010 No spiders here..... BUT do have issue with the Black Mold looking stuff above the water line. Anyone have a clue on this and a cure? Yup, it's BLACK MOLD! It forms around my control levers and on the underside of my filter cover despite attempting my best to meticulously maintain my hot tub. My water is always balanced. Water does not normally contact these areas, so the chemicals don't have a fighting chance. Occasionally, I'll use a very soft brush around my control levers and under the filter cover and rinse them off to keep things in check. A bit of this mold/algae/whatever will also form on the underside of my cover. I scrub it with a little bleach mixed with water at each water change. Quote
