jesshayl1 Posted October 10, 2009 Report Posted October 10, 2009 Hello, I cleaned my Jandy filter today. I put everything back just as I had taken it off. However, the tank has a medium-sized leak where the ring clamp goes around. I removed everything and made sure the BIG o-ring is not kinked or has anything on it. All looked fine. I also made sure to tighten the clamp so as not to exceed 1/16th of an inch gap where the ends meet. Any ideas? Do I need to lubricate the o-ring with some special lube? Any help you could give would be great. Thanks! Quote

One thing to check is that the O-ring is installed with the right side up. It isn't really an "O"...it is flat on one side. I just took mine apart again and cleaned the o-ring, the ledge on the bottom housing and the rim on the upper housing with soap and water, dried them all off, and put it back together. I didn't notice the rather large leak I had before, but the sides are wet and now it started raining so I'll have to check back later. I think in my case I just didn't clean it very well when I put it back together the first time. The pool is less than two years old...my seal looked good so I'm hoping that was the problem. Quote
Pool Clown Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 No lube, you probably just need a new o ring. Those o rings will only handle being taken apart and put back together so many times before they need to be replaced. Quote
quantumchromodynamics Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 The O-ring should be clean and not deformed or damaged. It should be smooth with no cracks or abrasions. The surfaces where the O-ring will seal also need to be very clean. I think that lubrication is very important to good O-ring performance. The lubrication allows the O-ring to be compressed without binding or bunching. The best lubrications are the silicone based lubes. The clamp and the part where the clamp touches need to be clean and smooth so that the clamp can be tightened smoothly and evenly. I will sometime put a little lube on the clamp to allow it to tighten more smoothly and evenly. Quote
