Shocking a spa can be accomplished in two ways...the addition of MPS aka non chlorine shock which is a powerful oxidizer or by reaching what is called breakpoint chlorination through the addition of chlorine to raise the free chlorine level to ten times the combined chlorine level. Shocking eliminates organics, etc left in the water by the sanitizer.

To simplify, you should shock your water at least weekly with either the proper amount of non chlorine shock or between five and ten ppm chlorine. Now the difference between chlorine and non chlorine shock is chlorine is a sanitizer and oxidizer while non chlorine shock only oxidizes...it has no sanitizing ability. You need a sanitizer to kill bacteria, etc and keep your water safe. Shocking or oxidizing burns up what is left behind to clear your water. Non chlorine shock does not disipate chlorine in water, it should do the opposite..allow your free chlorine level to last longer.

My routine is I sanitize as needed (when used) and shock with non chlorine shock weekly. If my water gets into trouble I add a shock dose of chlorine to get it clear.
