wanermills
Hello all, i have a hot tub heater that has a problem, when powering the hot tub on from the mains in the house the heater turns on (without pump on) and sounds like a kettle while control panel is showing heater is off? it then eventually trips the red button near the heater element after about 40 seconds.if i turn on the control panel the heater on the pump starts and heater does not trip until up to temp. After opening the heater cover the wires around the heater and ''sensors'' look like they need replacing,i have opened main control box and the heater relay also looks like it has been very warm. what could cause heater to turn on without the lcd controller's main power light on??? what would you suggest i look at 1st? the lcd works as it should fine on everything else. there is also lots of flow when the pump for heater is on. https://www.flickr.com/photos/25806980@N04/25502362986/in/photostream/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/25806980@N04/24901783923/in/photostream/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/25806980@N04/25435745211/in/photostream/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/25806980@N04/25232878030/in/photostream/
Dr. Spa
I'm curious. Did it ever occur to you to begin your post with; I have a (year), (brand), (model) hot tub with the following problem... And if not, WHY isn't it something you considered?
wanermills
Hello Dr. spa, sorry i bought this 6 years ago from ebay, its a cheap Chinese imported one, as some writing is Chinese, with whirlpool motors. and blower.it has a digital temp readout that i can adjust. I apologize i am not used to writing on forums,i just assumed the basic electronics would be similar from one to another, I rushed writing and did not think, thankyou for reply
Dr. Spa
I'd start at the "Water Pressure Switch"...which shouldn't have continuity when the pump is OFF... though it could also be a stuck (closed) relay that powers the heater (the covers should simply pull off). 20160305_153949 by waynermills, on Flickr
Dr. Spa
I think the Water Pressure Switch is on the right with the thin brown and blue wire going to it. The "red button" is a high limit switch....which has a GREEN wire going to it???? (Totally illegal in the USA). 20160305_154003 by waynermills, on Flickr I'd slide the black covers off the relays and check that one is not welded shut. wanermills
i disconnected pressure switch and tested, its stuck on/closed circuit . i also lifted the top of relay off, looks like it got very hot inside, plastic was charred and contacts welded shut. Thankyou i think this answers my questions perfectly,I will now order new relay and pressure switch and cut back all charred wires and replace connectors.what would cause the wires, relay and limit switch to get so hot? could the 3kw heater element be to faulty in some way? is there a way to test with test leads? Thankyou
Dr. Spa
A loose connection could cause this.
