doncross72
I have an advanced spa designs 315 gallon hot tub. The screwplug heating element has started seeping around either the thermowells or heating element. I decided to tear it apart and replace it since I'm not a fan of water seeping into the control box and it does not really appear that there is any good way to seal it. The heating element is screwed into the end of a piece of Schedule 80 pvc pipe. This is where it is interesting. The hot tub is a 120V system. The heater that is in the hot tub is a 240V 6Kw heater so it should be running at 120V and effectively a 1.5Kw heater. The installed heater is a 14 inches long hairpin type element. Does anyone see a problem if I just replace the heater with a 1.5Kw 120V heater. It looks like the heating element will be much shorter than the original so I wanted to make sure I don't do something stupid like start melting the pipe that the heater is mounted inside of. Thanks and I love this forum! Very informative on all sorts of topics!
Spa_Guru
You can replace it with a 120v 1500w element, however, keep in mind you should tage the heater so the heater is never converted to 220v. Don't buy a $11 hardware store galvanized element, it will corrode almost immediately, get an element designed for spa use.
