Best Book On Pool Chemistry?

Recommended Posts

Hello, fellow forum members! I am new here, and have owned a pool (installed when I bought my house) for three years now. As a chemical engineer who likes to have his chemical processes running perfectly, I enjoy controlling my pool chemistry. I have learned a lot from this forum, but I would like to purchase a fairly technical book on pool chemistry. Does anybody have any recommendations? I would not mind a section on maintaining pool plaster, too, as I have had some problems with this.

Thanks!

Sad news is there really isn't one. There are papers here and articles there but nothing all together in a book that reflects the current state of knowledge. Much of what is printed is just plain wrong and there are some myths that have become so thoroughly entrenched that it is almost possible to eradicate them, such as 'slugging' acid to lower TA and 'walking' acid to lower pH--pure fantasy!

You could start by looking at the thread Certified Pool Operator (CPO) training -- What is not taught and look at the links to various references and other threads. You can also look at Pool Water Chemistry as well as many other threads in The Deep End at Trouble Free Pool as well as The China Shop at The PoolForum. You'll see many posts from waterbear and myself as well as others. There are also posts in this forum, but the technical ones are not organized into a single section though Swimming Pool Water Chemistry would be one place as well as Hot Tub Water Chemistry.
