A pool pump water from the pool into the sump it fills up and overflows down the face of waterfall. Other waterfalls have a pipe that is capped off and bunch a holes drilled in it to create the waterfall effect. I have even seen people buy a water fitting plumb it to the filter system with a valve than build a big planter box with the waterfall jet incorporated inside.
