Filter Question, Maybe Stupid?

This maybe a stupid question, but I need to clean out the filter basket by the pump but if I open it up, water will come poring out everywhere, so how do I stop the water from poring out.. is there a way to stop the water? What should I do if I need to open that or remove the filter or remove my salt generator thing??? Maybe its something simple and I dont see it, but I can't for the life of me figure this out...

other question, how often and how long should I backwash the filter?

Does your pool have any valves installed inline with the hoses? Most are white with a handle. If none are installed you need to get some sort of plugs teo plug the skimmer and return line to do maintenace.

You want to backwash when to pressure is 10 psi higher than when the filter is clean. You should backwash until the water coming out is clear, and then rinse for 40 seconds

nope I dont have anything like you describe? Does that mean the pool guy installed wrong?

I have to backwash my filter then.. oh and is that pressure even with my polaris hooked up?

maybe I can plug up the skimmer somehow and also will need to plug up the other side? not sure if the water will come back through the filter, or not.

Go to your pool dealer and ask them for a couple of #9 plugs. This spring you should get 2 ball valves put in 1 in front of your pump & 1 after your SWG. I cant tell you how common this is. I have one competitor that has never put one on any of his aboveground pools.

I asked the pool guy and he said, nope he does not install them, and that most people just do whatever they need fast while water is coming out.. I laughed at him and hung up.. I went to lowes and bought to valves.. i bought some shower drain plugs, but they did not work...
