What Size Pump & Filter?

Pool is ~15+ years old; we only have one 230V line into the electrical box and used for heat pump, so we only have 115V for pump/motor. Pool has one skimmer and two inlets, all plumbing lines are 1.5”. We are using an in-line Hayward (tablet) chlorinator and heat pump. There is an additional inlet on side of pool, I think it is for a pressure cleaner, we have a Dolphin auto cleaner (in love) so that inlet will never be used, can we use this as an additional inlet?

We are tired of the DE maintenance (in our 50’s) so our pool guy said a cartridge system would be best for our needs. The pool is not used much (mostly weekends, if that) so we want to confirm his recommendation for size of cartridge filter and HP for pump. We’ve been looking at Pentair WF and Hayward Northstar pumps but are not set in stone, I also understand the need of “+ one size up” when it comes to the filter.

Need to know what size cartridge (sq ft) and what size pump (115v) will work with our pool and new filter.

In order to help you size a filter and pump we need to know how much water you're moving. How many gallons of water in your pool, how far from the pool is the equipment?

If your pool pump you has working good at circulating the pool the same horsepower is good. With 1.5 in pipe I would not go anything bigger than a 1.5 horsepower.

You said you tired of DE filter, they are the best filters. Cartridge is the next in line, but I bet your pool guy did not tell you that the cartridges need to be replaced every 5 five years. Even sooner if you don't clean them and they are not cheap. For cartridge I do like the Sta Rites System 3 filters, they work really good. With a cartridge filter you want the the water to move slower through it so it can catch the most dirt. Also you with to the same maintenance as a DE filter.

Also Pentair has a new sand filter that can remove small debris than a regular sand filter.

Sand filters work but take a longer time to clear the water if it becomes cloudy. A sand filter is also a good choice if pool care can't be done on a regular basis, they are most forgiving.

With only a skimmer pulling water from the pool, the to pumps you have listed will work but you want the lowest hp you can get away with. These pumps can move alot of water and they might never run at full prime if the flow rate is to high.

If you want to you can take the extra pool cleaner line and make a extra return it is up to you.

Most all single speed pumps can run on 110 or 220 volts

In order to help you size a filter and pump we need to know how much water you're moving. How many gallons of water in your pool, how far from the pool is the equipment?

Sorry missed those points. Our current system HW DE EC-65 w/HW Maxflow 1 HP pump all about 10+ yrs old, best guess. Filter and pump are about 10-12’ from skimmer and ~18” off water level and in a shed by the pool. 20 x 40 x 8(deep end), vol 35K gals with a DTH of 50ish, yes?

Based on your information, and with the obvious caviat that we all have our personal or professional preferences regarding equipment (I prefer Pentair), here are some options:

1hp Pentair WF pump

For filters, since you want to reduce your maintenance, there are cartridge: Filters better than sand, but not as well as DE. You are correct, with backwashing and having to recharge, etc, there will be less maintenance with Cartridge. However, cartridges need to be cleaned periodically - 2-3 times per year on average depending on debris volume.

Recs: Pentair CCP240 or Starite S7M120

or there's sand filter - no it doesn't filter down to the nano-microns, but for residential use they are really great and super low mainenance. Backwash periodically, roll up hose, no recharging, sand lasts a long time 6-10 years based on debris. Since you are using the Dolphin (They really are great ), I'm guessing your debris is pretty well undercontrol.

I'm certain other's will have recommendations as well throughout the week.

Great news. i was very strongly leaning Pentair 1 HP, WFE-4 full rated ENERGY EFFICIENT over the standard FW. There isn't a big difference is there, other than cost? Thanks also about the filter, the cleaning was a pain with the DE, but i think it was more or the amount of water lost in back washing. The filter will help our water bills a lot. How did you determine what size (sq ft) of filter our pool needs? I have looked and asked many people but not one person or store could show me a chart or give any calculations used, so how did you do it?

as for the Dolphin, the wife wanted a young stud poeple guy to mainatin the pool, so the cash for the cleaner was a no brainer

The filter you have is rated to turn over 25,000 gallons in a 8 hour period of time. If your pool was clear that is the number you want to be around. A bigger filter will not hurt anything. So if you went with a Sta Rite Cartridge filter I would recommend model S7M400. It is a 90 sq ft filter that can handle 24-55,000 gallons in 8 hours. You want to flow rate of the pump to be within limits of the filter, which a 1 hp is for most filters. Plus you really limited by the pipe size which is around 40 GPM
