ProfitOfDoom Posted August 1, 2009 Report Posted August 1, 2009 Some guy is selling his above ground 27' pool, He said he had it for a long and his kids just dont use it anymore. Im not sure of the brand but it has a jacuzzi sand filter with a bromine thingy. It looked pretty good the sides and tops wasn't rusty. It was filled up and running looked decent and he only wants $300 for it. The skimmer thing on the side had a crack in it,but he said he epoxied it and its fine, but would a replacement be easy to come by for it,like is that a standard part or is each pool different and might be hard to find? The sand filter also had a little leak where the top went on "not bad just a steady dribble" Something to be worried about or just needs to be re seated? But for $300 I thought it was a good deal,But I dont know much about them hopefully someone and can chime in and make me feel better about this purchase. We currently have a 18' intex pool that is 4' I was hoping that was 5'deep,but the guy said his buddy actually just dug out the bottom of his and made it deeper,is there any truth to doing this? I guess you could but wouldnt you need a bigger liner? If there is anything I need to know please tell me,Thanks Quote

Side wall corrosion more likely to be seen on the inside under the liner than the outside of a steel pool. These days, most anything for $300 sounds like a good deal - depending on the make and model of pool you can probably find a replacement skimmer but it epoxy has stopped the leak I wouldn't worry about it. IMO - the two biggest drawbacks to AGPools are depth and limited filtration capability due to only one water intake (skimmer) and one water outlet in the pool wall. We have had 27 ft round pools for about 21 years. The original contractor used an extended depth liner and created a sloping bottom to a center "main drain" with a depth of approx. 6 1/2 feet - WOW, what a difference in the quality of pool use the extra depth gave us PLUS the center drain is a second water inlet to the pump and filter so he also added a second outlet for water to enter the pool after leaving the pump and filter which resulted in very superior filtration. We prefer our cartridge filter and in-line auto chlorinator but sand is a fine alternative. Extra depth is worth the price of an expanded depth liner, in our personal experience. An above ground pool can be the equal of any in ground pool with a bit of imagination and at a MUCH lower cost. Quote
Pathfinder Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 You are going to need a new liner. There is no question about it the current one will not survive. Once drained it will become brittle. Skimmers are very inexpensive $45 so get a new one with new gaskets. The gasket on the dial head is probably toast. So you will probably need a new dial head as they dont make replacement gaskets. A new dial head is about $150. So you are looking at around $700 for a new standard full print liner, skimmer & dial head. Quote
ProfitOfDoom Posted August 4, 2009 Author Report Posted August 4, 2009 Im not sure But I know its not vinyl the tops is some kind of metal I guess aluminum. I'll find out for sure what it all needs in a few days when I go to pick it up. About these extra depth liners how do they work,do you just buy a 27' and say I want 5' deep. So seeing how the pool is 4' standard I would just dig a 1' deeper where the pool would go "well actually a foot and a half to make room for sand?" and just put it together like normal? Quote
