Susanj
My TA is low (40) but pH is high at 8.2. How do you raise TA without raising pH? We have a new hot tub in a vacation rental and we don't live in that town to maintain it ourselves.. Once it's filled and balanced does it basically just need shock weekly? Because I know maintenance guys aren't going to wait 30 minutes in between adding chemicals and adjusting. Do the test strips test for total or free bromine? Isn't it free that's important? chem geek
See also this post. Aeration of the water will outgas carbon dioxide causing the pH to rise. If you add acid to lower the pH, then the TA gets lowered as well. You don't want the TA to get too high or else the pH will rise even faster. It sounds like what you need is supplemental pH buffering. Are you using 50 ppm Borates (usually from boric acid)?
