plevine1
My DE filter is approx 15 years old. The grids are original. Over the last few years I've notice more and more small dirt particles returning into the pool. This year I can't keep up with the amount of dirt. So...... What is the life of a grid? Could my problem be not enough DE (although I can't seem to get my pressure below 10 psi regardless of the number of backwashes). My filter is an American Products Model #:584090 They are no longer in biz. How could I replace the grid with the company gone? Considering the age of the filter should I consider replacing the entire unit?

American products is gone but the company who bought them and has replacement parts is Pentair. They are supplying the parts for Am prod stuff. Also I know Unicel makes replacement elements for a wide range of filters and well as Pleatco. The best way to go about this is with name of the filter, American products triton, fns etc. Then the square ft of the filter 36,48 etc. A good pool store should be able to figure it out. Another way is to reomve one of the grids and measure the length and width and the type of top it as. weather it be slotted or not. Also were it connects to the pipe inside the filter that element is most of the time a little smalller. see if your filter is listed here under american products http://www.poolcenter.com/parts_filter_poolstor.htm

I would go for a new system (Cartridge filter and pumps), but as long as the filter cage is in good shape you can always simply replace the grids. I think the right replacement grid for your filter is Unicel FS-2004
plevine1
A few people have suggested I replace the DE system with a Sand filter. I'm not totally opposed to this solution. A Hayward Sand filter + 300lbs sand + installation will likely cost me $500 or more. Things are a little tight in this neck of the woods, with a daughter starting college in 2 months I am on a tight budget. I don't know if replacing the grid will be a cheaper solution. I'll need to continue my search, while cleaning the pool DAILY!
