Pump periodically fails to run on any speed.

Hi all,

I bought a Hudson Bay Spa Company HBSC1 one-person (100 gallon) hot tub about a year ago. It has a 2-speed pump. Periodically, the pump will not come on automatically and when the pump speed button is pressed, it just hums and blows big air bubbles out of the vent where the ozone comes out.  It doesn't heat the water when in this condition. If I cycle through all the pump speed settings (off, low, high) sometimes it will return to normal operation. Other times, I must unplug it for several minutes, plug it back in and then usually cycle the switch until it starts up normally. Lately it has been malfunctioning every day or two, so I need to do something to fix it. I sent a message to the manufacturer through their website and they have not responded (unsurprisingly).

You can see a photo below of the pump/heater unit label which I think is the culprit. I don't really know anything about how it works or how to service it, although I am an electrical engineer and handy with a variety of repairs. I'd be very grateful if any of you would point me to resources I can learn from, sources of supply for replacement parts, or would share any pointers or tips I can use to repair this on my own. I'd like to upgrade this unit with a higher quality part which would be more reliable. I think Balboa has a good reputation, but do not want to replace it with the same unit which may suffer the same fate in another year.

Please share your thoughts; thank you in advance for any helpful posts.
