Winter Water Change

Recommended Posts

I need to change my water and was wondering if someone could review my plan before I get in over my head. I have been using bromine and my water maintenance worked fine for 3months. Now I just cant clear the water up (all my levels are fine) so I imagine it is just organic build up and timeto change the water.

It is winter here and minus 5 celcius outside so this wont be fun. I plan to drain the tub - but do I flush the system with a good shock first?

Ill wipe down the tub too - are there any suggestions for a chemical to clean with?

On refill I will follow the bromine steps pinned inthis forum. Only hiccup is that I dont have the bromine to add at the start - only bromine tabs. Is there another way to make the bromine bank using thetabs?

Finally are there any concerns with the temperature outside and the exposed tub (Im obviously going to work fast and not leave it overnight to freeze - but was wondering if antone out there had any cautions for me that I migh not be aware of).

Thanks in advance!

I would suggest using a "spa flush" product that you leave in over night to thoroughly clean the plumbing. I would not get in too big a hurry, because if you don't do it right the first time, you'll have problems and have to do all over again.

You should be able to order the flush product as well as the Sodium Bromide that you need online.

I have been trying to find Sodium Bromide - Amazon.com will not ship it to Ontario, Canada. Amazon.ca does not seem to carry it at all. This is the same fun I had trying to get a Taylor Test kit. I finally had it shipped to my brother in NY and he brought it on the plane when he came at Christmas. I guess I will try to find it in Buffalo the next time I go down.

If anyone knows where to get it in Ontario - please let me know!

Thank you for your help!

See if you can find any of the following products (I'm showing them on poolgeek.com, but you can find them in many spa retailers). You would add sodium bromide as directed at 1/2 ounce per 100 gallons using one of the following nearly pure sodium bromide products :

http://www.poolgeek.com/Robarb-Bromine-Energizer-P2988.aspx'>Spa Specialties Robarb Bromine Energizer ($1.50 per ounce)

http://www.poolgeek.com/Leisure-Time-Sodium-Bromide-Reserve-P355.aspx'>Leisure Time Sodium Bromide ($1.57 per ounce)

http://www.poolgeek.com/SeaKlear-Spa-Sodium-Bromide-P2423.aspx'>SeaKlear Spa Sodium Bromide ($0.98 per ounce)
