imintrouble
I just bought a home that had a pool that wasnt closed for 3 years or so. its an inground pool - approximately 18x36 with a brand new hayward northstar 1.5hp pump, hayward 27" sand filter, and a hayward inline chlorinator. I just installed and turned on the pump and thankfully all of the plumbing appears to be in working order. i am getting suction from the 2 skimmers adn lots of force out of the 2 jets. before i installed the pump i raked the far majority of the decaying leaves from the bottom. However, its impossible to see to the bottom because the pool is not clear. it was black and now it appears to be a brownish color. if you rake up the bottom some more it pulls up this brown silt with it. I put 3lbs of shock in the pool today as well as algacide. After about 8 hours of pumping i really dont see much of a change in the clarity. I have backwashed several times and each time it improves the suction and force from the jets but i really havent seen an improvement in the clarity. what do you suggest i do to make the water at least clearer so i can see what debris is left at the bottom to remove? Thank you in advance for your replies. BTW, i did a chemical test strip and the strip appears to be lower than ideal in every category. You can keep going your route with shock or you can get a flocculant, which will take all the particles in the water and drop it to the bottom. I am not sure if it will clear the water. If it a contrete pool maybe a full drain clean and refill is best. If it is liner pool I suggest not the empty it.
bhull2545
Chlorine, chlorine and more chlorine. (specifically liquid chlorine, you don't want to add lots of CYA) I had a very similar problem. Read this thread and you'll find lots of good advise. Bill
imintrouble
so i went to the pool store today and bought some alkaline booster, clarifier, and a hardness booster. i added a crapload of chlorine to the pool. i wanted to see if the clarifier did much of anything. the guy at the pool store said that having zero alkalinity in my pool is a real problem and suggested for the sake of my pump and all the metal parts that i boost it. what a mess. ill report back if the clarifier does anything.
