  1. I bought a round above ground pool last spring and installed a salt chlorine generator to it and put a small bucket of stabilizer in it and it stayed clear for me all summer. I drained it 3/4 full and put a innertube in the middle and hung a small bucket of chorine tabs and covered it. I just opened it and the water was clear and there are very small signs of rust. I have a metal top with metal columns but the corner tops are plastic with metal underneath. The rust spots seem to be around the bolts and screws on top and bottom. I did dig a small trench around the pool so the metal base wouldn't be sitting in puddles either from splashing or the rain. I used it one summer and figured it paid for itself, so this summer should be free to keep it clear, minus a little more stabilizer.
  2. I made a deck this year with safety in mind. I have one area that is for deck use like bbq, sitting round table and just enjoying outdoors and it is handrailed with a self closing gate that enters the deck attached to the pool. I can lock the pool deck off and still enjoy a deck. Great for after and before pool is opened in fall and early spring.
  3. Make sure the hose end on the skimmer side is not sucking any air.
  4. Scott I would vac to waste. Let me tell you why I think so. I this year installed a new AGP and bought one of those ez-steps to replace the ladder. When I put it together the directions told me to weigh it down by pouring filter sand inside it. I poured double the amount by directions and noticed a day later that sand was all around the steps. It was spitting out sand every time someone stood on them. I figured I would vac it out in filter mode since it was the right kind of sand for the filter anyway. After I was done maybe the next day I went to backwash and could not move the handle. The sand got in between the valve and siezed it up. I had to take the top assembly completely apart and rinse the sand out of it.
  5. I cleaned it all out today. tied the skimmer hose up. I used a shop vac and a water hose. Everything is o.k. It looked like the water made a tunnel inside the filter and was running thru it instead of filtering anything. I guess it was a good thing that the stabilizer made it thru and made me ask about it, or it would still be in there running with me clueless. As for the store, I will just not go back and she lost a customer. She did pronounce to be the owner, and if that is the case, I don't want that (expert) advice. Thank you waterbear for your concern. I'm sure I will be back here scouring thru the forums for answers and asking more questions. Maybe one day I will help save someone's pump.
  6. OK, The lady at the pool store said that I could use it and only use half as much as sand. I am a rookie at this and this is my first pool with sand filter. I tell ya you would think the store owner would know her business. But I did some research on the internet today and seen that this d.e was an additive for sand, like maybe a cup full. I hear you loud and clear and will get that out of my filter. Do I have to backwash until the skimmer is empty of water and if I do I will be getting a valve for it for future problems. and by the way my pressure gauge is reading 19 psi. Is this normal pressure?
  7. I just got my pool installed and and hooked up my 22" sand filter and an intex salt water chlorinator after it. I put 3 lbs. of stabilizer in the skimmer like the directions said too. I was afraid that the pump was starving for water and started to dig to where I could see some of the screen. I then noticed the stabilizer that was small enough to fit thru the skimmer screen made it all the way back to the pool. I used 2 boxes (50 lbs.) of D.E to fill my sand filter instead of using sand. Isn't the sand filter supposed to catch something as big as the stabilizer which is like the size of rock salt?
  8. Thanks for the info waterbear, I think I will just run 220 with 2-20 amp breakers out, then convert to 110 somewhere close to to filter for these things. And keep the pump motor 110.
  9. I am thinking of running 220 for my pump motor and changing the wiring in the motor. I have read that it will use less amps and lower my electric bill. But someone else told me that it will cause my motor to spin twice as fast. Is that correct or not? It is a 115 volt motor single speed with a three prong wire attached but when I pulled the plate it has more connecting screws for changing over to 220.
  10. I would not use inground cleaner for above ground pool. They are differnet for a reason. If the place you bought it from won't take it back or exchange it, I would try to sell it craigslist,e-bay, or another way and take a small loss rather than try to use it and ruin my liner and end up selling it used for even bigger lose, not to mention money in replacing liner.
  11. I'm not even a rookie, but with the little intex pools I have had in the past, sounds like residue of chlorine tabs that I used to get in my pool. I used to put too many tabs in and get white cloudy dust on bottom of pool and was constantly cleaning that lttle cartridge filter. Maybe, I don't know
  12. Hello, I bought a 27' round AGP and started digging the spot out level with my neighbors tractor. I got the spot pretty close to level and the rain started to fall. It has been about 10 days of rain every day since and it is a muddy spot now to say the least. My question is, when I finally get this pool up, in the future when it rains like this again, will the spot be firm since the pool will be there or will it be muddy and soft for the pool to sink? This spot is NOT at the bottom of the yard and actually is at the top but with so many days of rain it is soft. Should I build up crushed limestone instead of sand? I do have the corner cove and the gorilla bottom for it. Or is sand good enough?
