  1. Have a gunite pool and have had trouble with rather bad iron stains over most of pool surface. Last 2 years have been able to get majority of iron off of pool surface with natural chemistry stain free. At time of treatment also added cellulose fiber to cartridge filter and a sequestrant (jacks magic blue 2 years ago, natural chemistry metal free last year). Cellulose fiber was washed off filter after couple days and pool was maintained with either blue stuff (2 yrs ago) or metal free (this year) but iron stains eveantually came back (there were times when I'd forget to add sequestrant, but not very often). So, going to retreat again this winter. Thinking about using filter fiber (jacks filter fiber) on a continuous basis this time...to hopefully continue to filter out the iron? I was going to also add metal free sequestrant on ongoing basis. However, I read somewhere that it may not be best to use a sequestrant when using filter fiber as the sequestrant will further reduce water flow thru filter (on top of reduction from fiber) and the combo can increase pressure too much. Not sure if that's true. So, looking for any suggestions. Would using filter fiber on regular basis be a good idea and remove iron and do better job than sequestrant of preventing it from returning? If so, should I use sequestrant also or not? If not use filter fiber on chronic basis, then any sugeestions on preventing staining? I have a tendency to probably raise chlorine too high when shocking, which I think can precipitate the iron out...so will try to be better about that. thank you!!!
  2. Pool clown- couldn't I just spin the pieces going directly into pump to disconnect pvc from pump and thus not have to cut the pipe at all?
  3. The motor quit. Originally I was just going to replace motor but was able to get a new pump for only a little more $ than motor alone so figured I'd do whole thing. With your advice, I think I can do it. Thank you.
  4. Thank you. Here's 2 pics: http://s1005.photobucket.com/albums/af172/jim_taylor2/polaris/ If I hard pipe or use polaris tube, please let me know what to buy. If I use polaris tube, exactly where should I cut into the pvc (e.g., somehwere in the 1" section or where 1" goes into larger pvc? Sounds like just hard pipeing may be easier? Put anything on these fittings? teflon tape?
  5. Thanks pool clown. I think cuurent PVC running to/from booster pump is 1". I'm trying to post pics but can't figure out how to on this forum. Anyone know how to post a pic? In the mean time, I think my current booster pump is 110v (there's 2 red wires going to it). I'll get a voltage meter and check. My understanding is pb4 comes set at 220v and I'll have torewire for 110. Will that be very difficult?
  6. My polaris pb4 booster pump died so am picking up a new one. My current one is hard piped (PVC). I know the new one comes with the polaris reinforced hose. Does it matter if I install new one with polaris hose or should I hard pipe this one as well? either way, I'm not quite sure how to do it. If I use polaris hose, how do I connect hose to existing PVC? Is there some special piece of PVC that will allow the quick connect on hose end to connect? If I hard plumb, how do I connect PVC to the 2 ports on the booster pump...like what exactly do I need to buy to connect it? Thanks for any help!!!
  7. What you described is normal. Min operating temp for most heat pumps is about 45 F. Below that and they freeze up....won't start heating again until they manually defrost. An option on some heat pumps is a gas defrost, which actively defrosts the heat pump when it freezes to allow it to quickly start heating again and operate in temps below 45 F.
  8. Hi- I have a 15000 gal gunite pool (not salt water) with iron stains (pool guy tested it with jacks magic test kit) over most of pool surface. Water is clear. Just moved into house. I'm trying to decide between using proteam metal magic or jacks magic # 1 plus blue to remove stains. I know vitamin c can be used but I prefer to use one of products mentioned. I've read about both products. I'm looking for which one would work best and be easiest to use for a first time user. Metal magic seems to be easier...just adjust pH and add and let filter. I've read that it can cloud water and may have to floc water if it doesn't clear. My calcium hardness is about 320. With jacks magic, have to lower chlorine and pH then add stain solution #1 and blue. So...seems to me metal magic is easier. Anyone have experience with these products? Will they be equally effective? Is metal magic really easier to use? Thanks for any advice.
