KillyPumpkin Posted July 3, 2009 Report Posted July 3, 2009 I started off the year using chlorine tabs in my pool. Last year I did the BBB method but this year my pool is bigger so I thought it woud be fine. (It's an intex metal frame 12X30). It wasn't. Within a week I had cloudy water. I assumed this had to be from overstablization. Switched back to BBB and using bleach water cleared up within a few days. Since i can finally see the bottom of my pool I noticed some white stuff on the bottom. figured it was sand. Gave it a push with teh skimmer it's tiny pieces of chlorine tab. When I push it around instant cloud again. Any ways to get this to just dissovle already??? Quote
chem geek Posted July 3, 2009 Report Posted July 3, 2009 You wouldn't have had overstabilization from only one week of Trichlor tabs. It's more likely that the tabs took took too long to dissolve so the FC got too low. Nevertheless, the continued use of Trichlor tabs can be a problem for any pool, regardless of size. The reason is that for every 10 ppm FC added by Trichlor, it also increases CYA by 6 ppm. So even with a low chlorine usage of 1 ppm FC per day, this means that after 6 months the CYA will increase by over 100 ppm in 6 months, assuming no dilution. I'm not sure what the white stuff at the bottom the pool actually is. I assume your calcium hardness (CH) level is fairly low since you've got a vinyl pool (otherwise, it could be calcium carbonate if the pool were over-saturated with too high a combination of pH, CH and TA). You might try using a skimmer sock and intentionally stir this stuff up and try and get it through the skimmer (i.e. run the pump 24/7). If that doesn't work, you can use a filter aid (clarifier; or even floc if you can vacuum to waste). Intex pools often have poor circulation near the bottom of the pool since there is no floor drain and their pump is often weak. Quote
