I am getting ready to do Nitro's decontamination procedure and have a question regarding steps 3-6. Can this all be done at tap water temperatures (~70*F) or does the water need to be brought up to normal operating temperatures (~100*F)?

This is a picture of what I am trying to get rid of ... from a 2 month old Hot Spring spa using BaquaSpa. Will be switching to chlorine, maybe Nature2.

Yes, at a chlorine level of 50 ppm, it won't matter.

FYI, on step 5 you can also add 2 oz MPS (non-chlorine shock) right before you add the chlorine. That will really give it a good shock.

I think you will like Chlorine.

Thanks Nitro.

This is a brand new Hot Spring Envoy spa; manufactured 2Q/2009 and installed 5/15/2009. According to everybody I've talked to, this should not be happening. Nobody here knows for sure what we're dealing with. White water mold? Pink slime? Anyway, based on my dealer's recommendation, I've dumped, cleaned, refilled, dichlor shocked (4 tsp/100 gal), dumped, refilled and continued with BaquaSpa. Problem was back within a couple days. Now they have recommended going to chlorine or Nature2 low-chlorine recipe. They also recommended a decontamination process similar to yours. I am using yours. My dealer has been helpful; they gave me a generous credit at the store, provided the Spa Purge, dichlor, Nature2 cartridge, MPS and 5 new Watkins Tri-X filters ... no charge.

Anyway, I'm on step 6 of the process now. I did add the 2 oz of MPS you recommended and enough 6% Clorox to take the FC to about 60 ppm. Also orded a K-2006 kit from SPS Pools and Spa.

I will let you know how things go.

Best regards,

Mike

Quick update.

Followed Nitro's procedure and the FC about 2 hours after the dichlor shock was 10. After another 24 hours, FC was 8.7 ... a 13% Chlorine Demand. I think I finally killed whatever I was plagued with. I am so stoked. Currently pH is 7.5, TA is 103, TH is 222 and CYA is 11 (calculated). CSI is 0.13 !!! And the water is clearer than it ever was on BaquaSpa. Can't wait to add the borates. Ordered some ProTeam Gentle Spa that should be here by the end of the week.

I want to thank everyone who has contributed to this forum, especially chem geek and Nitro. I have really learned a lot in the last week.
