Normski Posted January 8, 2022 Report Share Posted January 8, 2022 Hi, I’m new to hot tubs, my hot tub as a UV light on it so I’m not using any chlorine or bromide, I shocked my tub with non chlorine shock yesterday and when I test the water today it’s should chlorine/bromide, can’t anybody explain this please ? skyburn Posted January 9, 2022 Report Share Posted January 9, 2022 I could be wrong, but depending on what shock you are using (for instance, MPS or potassium peroxymonosulfate), those test strips may incorrectly indicate high levels of chlorine. I'm not sure if that applies to test strips, but possibly. Note the 3rd bullet too - you might reconsider not using any chlorine or bromine in your tub. skyburn Posted January 9, 2022 Report Share Posted January 9, 2022 I think that indeed is MPS, and maybe it is the case that your strips are incorrectly identifying chlorine/bromine. I mean, if you aren't adding chlorine or bromine, I sincerely doubt there's much in your tub, right? You are obviously free to sanitize your spa however you wish, but there's an excellent method that many folks on this forum have adopted for their spa care: https://www.poolspaforum.com/forum/index.php?/topic/23090-dichlorbleach-method-in-a-nutshell/ While it uses dichlor to start and chlorine bleach thereafter, I've used it for many years and love it - the tub doesn't stink like chlorine nearly as bad as using chlorine/bromine tablets and skin irritation is essentially unheard of. You do have to add bleach on a regular basis and the UV thing does make you have to add it more regularly (assuming you're referring to a UV-based Ozonator). Normski Posted January 9, 2022 Author Report Share Posted January 9, 2022 Thanks for all your help, I guested it must of been a false reading but had absolutely no idea why and what you’ve explained has helped a lot. my tub is a wood burning tub, I’ve rigged it up to run through a sand filter and UV light.
