chem geek
Have you seen these? they are tablet or something that last for about 30 days or something.. So does anyone know about these? Do they work? They work somewhat OK when there is no wind since the reduce the rate of water evaporation that would cool the water. They are not nearly as efficient as a traditional solar cover. So they are better than nothing if there is no wind. If conditions are windy, then they generally don't work as the chemical tends to get piled up instead of evenly dispersed. Most of the customers who use them say they DO work. And this is NE Ohio. We reccommend using them along with a Solar Cover. The benefit is that instead of taking the Solar Cover off and on several times a day, you can leave it off all day and just put it on at night. Though each brand may be different, this post sounds like some may use wax. Some products use cetyl alcohol which would not be exepected to have this Crisco-like side effect. This post is from someone who used Solar Fish that didn't think it worked that well. This post is another negative experience. This post indicates that the paraffin wax may coat the filters. This post is another negative experience with solar fish. As this link indicates, some of these products work and some do not. Whether it works well (especially in wind) or not and the kind of side effects one sees is likely to be a function of whether the product uses paraffin wax vs. cetyl alcohol. So it's a mixed bag. Let the buyer beware -- it CAN work, and sometimes it doesn't. Richard
