chem geek
When you calculate your saturation index, are you supposed to use your total alkalinity or your carbonate alkalinity (factoring out roughly a third of your CYA)? You are supposed to use carbonate alkalinity so should adjust total alkalinity as you describe, though the one-third rule for CYA is only correct near a pH of 7.5. You can use The Pool Calculator to accurate calculate the index.
