  1. It seems the moderator on this forum won't allow discussions about the actual chemistry of hot tubs. He seems to be either a salesman for the Frog line of products or just completely clueless about true chemistry. There was a discussion about... you know... chemicals used by Frog and the discussion was shut down. Nobody was providing inaccurate information but yet he felt the need to intercede and stop people from posting. This thread will probably get stopped too but since it will be my last post on here I don't care. Why have a forum about something you can't discuss. That is a horrible forum.
  2. I posted a correction shortly after my original post... Slight correction here is the list of ingredients... 1.8% different... possibly. They may just not be listing that 1.8% like the tablets do. 2000 FLushes Bleach Tablet (not the blue one): Bleach Tablet 1,3-Dichloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin 118-52-5 81.1% 1,3-Dichloro-5-ethyl-5-methylhydantoin 89415-87-2 16.1% Chloro-5-ethyl-5-methylhydantoin Not assigned 1.8% Non-Hazardous Ingredients Mixture 1.0% I just looked up that Chloro-5-ethyl-5-methylhydantoin on Haz-Map.com and from the uses - Sources/Uses Halohydantoins: Used as disinfectants in swimming pools, hot tubs, toilet bowls, and industrial systems (cooling water, pulp and paper, wastewater, and sewage); Also used as slimicide for paper/paperboard for food contact; [Reference #1] So it looks like the only thing not accounted for is that 1% which is Non-Hazardous. Does anyone think this wouldn't work?
  3. I actually started a thread today discussing something similar. I found this thread afterwards while doing some google searches. Through some of the information provided here I was able to find out that 2000 Flushes Bleach(not the blue version) is the same actual chemical make up as these SmartChlor Cartridges. Look up 2000 Flushes Bleach on Amazon, or wherever you can see the front of the box, and look at the chemical composition... exactly the same. Slight correction here is the list of ingredients... 1.8% different... possibly. They may just not be listing that 1.8% like the tablets do. 2000 FLushes Bleach Tablet (not the blue one): Bleach Tablet 1,3-Dichloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin 118-52-5 81.1% 1,3-Dichloro-5-ethyl-5-methylhydantoin 89415-87-2 16.1% Chloro-5-ethyl-5-methylhydantoin Not assigned 1.8% Non-Hazardous Ingredients Mixture 1.0%
  4. First time post as new to the hot tub world. Thanks in advance for any help you can give. I own 4 rentals with hot tubs at each one that I have recently started maintaining myself. The previous guy who took care of the hot tubs for us used the frog @ease smartchlor cartridges in one of the floating devices you can buy with the mineral cartridge as well. They seem to work good and allow me a little flexibility on when I have to service them but I go through one about every 10-14 days at roughly $20 a pop. I am all about saving money and I was thinking I could use a silicone plug and drill a hole in these and reuse them if I can find the chemicals they have in them. It shows the active ingredients as 1,3-dichloro-5,5-dimethydantoin 81.1% and 1,3-dichloro-5-ethyl-5-methythydantoin 16.1% and "other ingredients" as 2.8%. I think I read that right but it is really small print and I have a hard time reading regular print anymore. Does anyone know if there is another name for this stuff and where I might find it? I was trying to google it and wasn't having much luck.
