Does any one try to replace a rope with a wire for in-ground automatic pool cover? Will it work?

It was a painful experience to find the way to pull this rope from the in-wall rope track but eventually I got it!

Should I cut the old rope and try to use metal wire to fit a new rope to outside rail first, then try to fish it out on the turn, and continue in the inside rail. I anticipate it is going to be painful. Any tricks?
