Thank you all for these answers - my only question now is how do I get panty hose to stay on the returns long enough to see if the sand is coming out! I figure something out - thanks again.

Hello, I am new to the daily maintenence of a pool. I am noticing that when my filter is on, after six hours or so, thee is a build up of dirt and or sand in spots throughout the pool (gunite). When I left the filter off for 40 hrs or so, there was no sandy dirt build up. Can anyone explain what might be happening here? Is there anything I can do on my own with the filter? The pool company that opens and closesthe pool is extremely busy and slow respond to any service calls. Thank you for any help / advice you could provide!!
